Window Rescue

Window Rescue is a free Windows app that brings lost windows back on screen. Unplug a monitor or change resolution, and a window can end up open but out of reach.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Home and the active window jumps to the screen under your mouse. Click the tray icon and every off-screen window comes back at once.

Window Rescue

Overview

Windows remembers where a window was, even when that screen is gone. The built-in fixes exist, but few people know the keyboard tricks to use them.

We built Window Rescue as a small, open-source utility that solves this one problem with one shortcut, and published it on the Microsoft Store.

Key Features

  • One shortcut brings the active window back, centered and resized to fit.
  • One click on the tray icon rescues every off-screen window.
  • Works with multiple monitors and mixed display scaling.
  • Customizable shortcut and optional start with Windows.
  • No network access and no data collected.

Technical Approach

We rewrote an early prototype in Rust against the Win32 API directly, taking the app from a 67 MB bundle to a single executable under 400 KB, with no runtime to install.

The app is open source and ships through the Microsoft Store and GitHub releases, both built by one automated release pipeline.

  • Rust and the Win32 API, with no framework or runtime.
  • Per-monitor DPI awareness and visible-frame positioning.
  • MSIX packaging and CI releases with GitHub Actions.
